Honorifics: A sociocultural verb agreement cue in Japanese sentence processing

چکیده
Case marking is the major cue to sentence interpretation in Japanese, whereas animacy and word order are much weaker. However, when subjects and their cases markers are omitted, Japanese honorific and humble verbs can provide information that compensates for the missing case role markers. This study examined the usage of honorific and humble verbs as cues to case role assignment by Japanese native speakers and second-language learners of Japanese. The results for native speakers replicated earlier findings regarding the predominant strength of case marking. However, when case marking was missing, native speakers relied more on honorific marking than word order. In these sentences, the processing that relied on the honorific cue was delayed by about 100 ms in comparison to processing that relied on the case-marking cue. Learners made extensive use of the honorific agreement cue, but their use of the cue was much less accurate than that of native speakers. In particular, they failed to systematically invoke the agreement cue when case marking was missing. Overall, the findings support the predictions of the model and extend its coverage to a new type of culturally determined

Honorifics in Japanese Sentence Interpretation: Clues to the Missing Actor
Cross-linguistic research in the framework of the Competition Model (MacWhinney & Bates, 1989) has shown that casemarking is the major cue to sentence interpretation in Japanese, whereas other cues such as animacy and word order are much weaker. Japanese is a pro-drop language. Many Japanese sentences are grammatical without subjects and objects. When subjects are absent, case-markers are also ...
متن کاملEncoding and Retrieval Interference in Sentence Comprehension: Evidence from Agreement
Long-distance verb-argument dependencies generally require the integration of a fronted argument when the verb is encountered for sentence interpretation. Under a parsing model that handles long-distance dependencies through a cue-based retrieval mechanism, retrieval is hampered when retrieval cues also resonate with non-target elements (retrieval interference). However, similarity-based interf...
متن کاملImplicit Prosody and Cue-based Retrieval: L1 and L2 Agreement and Comprehension during Reading
This project focuses on structural and prosodic effects during reading, examining their influence on agreement processing and comprehension in native English (L1) and Spanish-English bilingual (L2) speakers. We consolidate research from several distinct areas of inquiry-cognitive processing, reading fluency, and L1/L2 processing-in order to support the integration of prosody with a cue-based re...
متن کاملSystem for Flexibly Judging the Misuse of Honorifics in Japanese
We propose a system for flexibly judging the misusage of honorifics in Japanese sentence. The system can point out misused words and phrases, and can also indicate how they are misused. The system uses judgment rules whose degrees of validity in modern Japanese society are quantified by psychological experiments. The system can judge sentences flexibly based on the learner's linguistic level by...
متن کاملProcessing canonical and non-canonical sentences in Basque: the case of object-verb agreement as revealed by event-related brain potentials.
In this study we investigated the generality of the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying verb agreement relations by looking not only at subject-verb (SV) but, moreover, at object-verb (OV) agreement phenomena in Basque-a language in which both the subject and the object have to agree with the verb. We first provide event-related potentials (ERP) evidence for processing differences in SV ...
